Climb a mountain

  • Mount Desert Island

  • The Precipice Trail is located on the east side of Champlain Mountain, about a mile north of the Schooner Head entrance. It is the most challenging climb in the park—a 1,000-foot climb up exposed vertical cliffs. In places the climber is required to use short bridges and iron ladder rails that have been drilled into the pink granite. Not for the faint of heart or kids, and shouldn’t be attempted in inclement weather.

The Beehive, a large chunk of pink granite, sits across the road fom the Sand Beach parking lot. At 520 feet, it’s not the highest or longest climb in the park, but is probably one of the more dangerous. The trail begins gradually but rises abruptly when it turns at the wooden trail marker in the woods. It shouldn’t be attempted in inclement weather. The trail requires the use of iron ladder rungs similar to those found on the Precipice Trail, and iron grates have been put in place to fill in gaps in the ledge.

The summit is also accessible via a much less vertically challenging trail that leads around the back of the Beehive.

Cadillac Mountain—With a summit of 1,530 feet, Cadillac is the highest mountain in the park and on the eastern seaboard. The road snakes up the mountain in a series of traverses and intermittent sharp hairpins until it reaches the parking lot at the summit.

On a clear day the view from the top is unobstructed and awe inspiring. The Porcupine Islands, Bar Harbor, Frenchman Bay, the Cranberry Isles, and the vast Atlantic Ocean can be seen from the summit. The road is open 24 hours a day, but only from April 15–November 30.
